ENHANCING URBAN-ENVIRONMENTAL-SUSTAINABILITY-THROUGH FIGHTING-CLIMATE-CHANGE-IMPACT WITH TOTAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROJECT

The project “ Enhancing Urban-Environmental-Sustainability-Through Fighting-Climate-Change-Impact With Total Community Engagement” The project started in 2015 after the devastated floods that hit Malawi including Blantyre City. The project aims at reducing the impact of climate climate that have been caused by deforestation and carbon emissions in Blantyre townships. The project involves the restoration of the degraded-mountains in Blantyre city. Since people are also cultivating in some of the mountain tops, its impossible to relocate them. Therefore the restoration involves planting fertility-enhancing-trees like acacia in the same fields which are cared by farmers as they care for their crops. It is also involving mechanisms that are reducing deforestation such as community established local-bylaws and advocating for community use of Liquified-Petroleum-Gas(LGP) Stoves whereby reducing Carbon-emissions as-well.This year the project has been funded by UNDP under Global Environmental Fund(GEF) through its Small Grants Programme (SGP).
