Improving the lives of flood victims December report.

Introduction:

In the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy, our initiative aimed to provide a lifeline to vulnerable victims by ensuring access to clean drinking water. The installation of two manual hand pumps marked the beginning of positive transformations within the affected communities.

This is a story of a woman in Chiradzulu district in Traditional Authority (T/A)  Likoswe.

In the midst of adversity, a woman called Lindiwe with a family of four children and a loving husband faced unimaginable struggles in her search for clean water. Every day, Lindiwe would rise before dawn, braving the dangers of wild animals, rapists, and heartless thugs. Her determination was unwavering, but when Cyclone Freddy struck early this year (March), destroying the nearby borehole, her burden became almost unbearable. However, a glimmer of hope emerged when a water manual hand pump (from Busy Youth Organisation with a grant from Global Giving under disaster relief) was installed in her village. This simple yet life-changing device transformed her world. No longer did she have to wake up at the crack of dawn; instead, she could focus on preparing her children for school and even pursue her passion for cooking by attending part-time afternoon classes. With tears of gratitude streaming down her face, she realized that this small act of kindness had brought immeasurable joy and freedom to her life.”

Impact of the 2 pumps on Communities:

  1. Providing Clean Water to 600 individuals.

With the functioning hand pumps, 600 flood victims now have a sustainable source of clean drinking water. This not only addresses an immediate need for health but also lays the foundation for stronger, more resilient communities.

  1. Relief for Women and Young Girls:

Traditionally burdened with fetching water, women and young girls faced the arduous task of walking up to 5 miles in search of clean water. The installation of hand pumps has been a game-changer, alleviating them from the physical strain and time consumption associated with this daily ordeal.

  1. Empowering Women for Economic Growth:

The time and energy saved by women are now redirected towards more productive activities. Engaging in small businesses, nurturing home gardens, and investing in children’s education are now feasible endeavors. This shift contributes significantly to overall economic development and community upliftment.

  1. Enhanced Education Opportunities:

With the burden of water-fetching reduced, women can now focus on preparing children for school and actively participating in their educational journey. This not only ensures better child development but also contributes to an overall improvement in children’s education within the community.

Thank You to Donors:

We express our sincere gratitude to the donors who made the initial phase possible. Your generosity through Global Giving Organization has directly impacted the lives of over 1500 individuals now, creating ripples of positive change within communities .

Appeal for Continued Support:

While the impact of the two hand pumps is commendable, the scale of need exceeds the current capacity. We urge donors to consider the profound impact of their contributions and kindly request GlobalGiving to regrant the project, allowing us to extend our reach and bring clean water to more cyclone-affected communities. Your continued support will make a lasting difference in the lives of those striving to rebuild after the devastation of Cyclone Freddy.

Thank you for being a vital part of our journey towards community resilience and sustainable development.
